Placing a private post in here so I don't have to retype. Anyway, after receiving this private message I looked into it and saw that my service provider has virtual servers now, that means that instead of 129 a month and up for a dedicated box I could buy a core on a machine and a set amount of ram for as low as 29 instead. They also offer dynamic donation services for it. I figure that I can deal with a trial period to see how the interest goes so i'm looking into setting up a test service today.

I'll reply to this thread once (if) it is up and working, it all depends on how the server handles the program I wrote to auto host and if it runs nox at all ( a problem since nox has no dedicated console only server).

Hey Mord,

I know you get pissy when people talk about dedicated servers but I have a legit question for you. I've been talking to Blob and a few others, we've been playing almost every other night together and keeping in contact via skype. Anyway we are seriously interested in putting up the funds to start up a dedicated server.

I'm not sure how the Russians did it, but using the Russians patch Blob to set up a network game via Hamachi (Which I know is garbage and pointless since there is xwis) anyway I was able to connect just using the Russians patch, no xwis needed. So would we be able to pay a company to set up an Hamachi server for nox? Would it be less hectic for them or does in not make a difference?

The point to all this is there any companies or anything out there you know of whom would be willing to set up a server for Nox? We are willing to put the funds up front to get it to go, but lack the connection speed to do it ourselves as well as the intelligence with computers.

I know Nox 2 is in the works, but we would really like to get something going with this for the time being, there are literally NO (as in 0) North American servers, the only time you can play with a decent amount of players is if you stay up till 3 in the morning to play with Koreans, and at that point you have 250 ping.

Hoping you can help me out.

Thanks for reading Mord

What I did before was actually host games on a dedicated server, I could recreate and maintain the exact same thing as before with a virtual server. I'm looking at one now from the same company that hosts my ventrilo and minecraft servers for about $29. I can set up a donation system using the provider as well to allow others to chip in for the service. Neither of these options existed two years ago when I was originally hosting the servers.

I don't want to steer away from xwis because it is the default connection system and anyone looking to play that hasn't in years will see it right away.

I'll tell you what, i'll set up a trial run of the server for a month or two and see how it goes, not every server can run nox at all since it has no console mode and i'm not sure how these would handle it.

Set up a chip-in system. It isn't about the money (since it is pretty cheap now) it is about how worthwhile it would be to do this. Last time I paid for the service it cost me roughly $1,100 over the duration and didn't see that much use. The same duration now would be more like $300 but still would like to see it used.

The server is ordered though, I'll notify when it has been setup.

Wow wasn't expecting a reply like that, that sounds awesome Mord, the chip in feature will really help so people would see what the server costs.

That way you don't have people thinking a quota has been met when it hasn't, and they know the money is going directly to the server.

For the trial run, do you have a free trial period with the provider or are you being charged from the get go? Just curious how soon your going to set up the collection for donations toward the server.

Also whats the name of the company?

Charged $29 already for the first month. Provider is artofwarcentral.com.

Adding this to the thread for clarification.

*Edit* Also chip-in is a donation system, I was going to use the one that the provider supplied but it didn't give any sort of total for the people donating so I felt that it wasn't transparent enough.

I'm currently not at home so I'm not sure if you managed to get the servers up yet, I'm going to Mexico for 1 week and will chip in as soon as I get back.

Test server is up, tell me if it lags, what the map rotation is like, if you can even join.

I can set up more later, trying to re hash out all of the config files like I had them before and the map rotation is default (as I remember the default rotation was shit, so feel free to make suggestions about alternative maps).

I suggest turning to arena 15 lessons and adding deathtrp and that snow map. I played 10 min no lag at all.

Is that Olaf guy somehow doing that? Guy just sits in the server and bad mouths doesn't even play.

And as stated by others max players is 7, needs to be bumped up.

But seems pretty good and I'm on a shitty laptop at the airport.

Ya that Olaf guy is trying to kill the server, sits on there for hours and pings the server at the final 2 during Elim and fucks it up.

Ok well I don't know it must just be my connection, other than the bit of delay I'm getting server is going fine.
