Hey dudes, I downloaded the .zip, and extracted the install.msi thingy. I installed it, however after opening the .exe, it seems it crashes on my XP. halp!

Thanks. You managed to tell us nothing. A little bit more information would help both you and anyone that plans on helping you.

Exactly when does it crash?
What kind of crash? Does it lock up or does it just poof back to desktop? Is there an error message?
Did you try any compatibility modes or did you open it once, see it "crash" and decide to tell us about it without trying anything yourself?

I've decided to re-install and I'm using this download to do it.

I'll post the results.

(in b4 everything works fine)

Well, everything went as planned.

Installed with msi. Installed the Westwood online part.

Loaded it up

Put in a username and password

Logged in and started playing on Chumleigh's 56k euro CTF.

Everyone is still terrible and I think a 200+ ping handicap makes it pretty fair.

msi is the file extension.

There's two installers, both of which you need to run. One is for the game, and the other is for the online components.

I couldn't find an .msi installer in the one I got from http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~awesie/NoxInstall.zip, but there was an .exe installer.

So anyways, I previously installed from the .iso available via bittorrent (yes the same one that's in the easy install stuff). It went in smooth. Then I tried to install the patches and they both bitched about files not being the expected ones, etc... but it still plays in solo and such, haven't tried it with the wolapi.dll with the xwis IP, but hey maybe sometime...

Then I uninstalled it thinking "hey, I'll try the easier install and see what it's about."

It installed smoother.

"Cool", I thought.

Then I ran it.  Tried solo, selected a character.  When it went to load the game, it exited NoX.exe silently, without even a burp.

Then I ran it and tried multiplayer. Connected to xwis, selected a game and character.  When it got to loading, it exited the same way...

Did i do something wrong?  I put the serial I got from the keygen into .exe installer... maybe that was it... oh well.

Fuck it, I'm going to try installing from the cd again and patch the wolapi.  Daemon tools rocks btw.  Been using since win95.

Edit: It's an XP Sp3 box running on a Dell Mini 10 (which I can't get to run a command prompt at full screen for some graphics mode incompatibility issues i haven't isolated yet). Just so you know. As if you care.

They're packaged differently, I guess. Thanks for pointing that out though, I just downloaded from that link and I can confirm it. Use the exe instead, doesn't matter.

Now, onto your actual problem. When you are about to enter a game/solo it poofs to desktop. The first thing I would try is looking into the Saves or Save folder in the Nox Directory to see if there are already player files(.plr) in there. If so, delete them all and try again.

You shouldn't need a serial period. I don't even think Nox checked it when you installed from CD.

If you're having graphics issues unrelated to Nox, that is more than likely causing issues with Nox as well. The software is now over a decade old and more and more people are having issues related to drivers and currents graphics cards simply not running its version of Directx. If you do happen to get it working, feel free to post your solution in this thread.

p.s: I do care, ever so much and I want you to know I love everyone as much as a boil on my ass. I haven't taken a hot knife to you yet, so that's saying something.

I downloaded the one from filefactory too and fc says its the same file.  It's got the .exe and not the .msi too.  Someone updated these packages since the initial release apparently.  I can't get it to keep from poofing back to the desktop.  Maybe you should give it a shot.  I'm did a windiff of the cd install + patches and this distribution. It seems there are ALOT of extra files in this package.  Not really sure why.

Tell you what, I'm going to throw a copy of XP onto a VMWare box and run this installer and see if I have a problem with my specific archetecture or if this distribution is borked.  I'll let you know.

p.s. I highly suspect it's this distribution dying, as the cdrom install works flawlessly... Wink also, as long as it's that free stong sword of embers from warrior solo chapter 1, i'm all for getting popped like an ass boil.
