LOL!!! thats the FUNNIEST THING I SAW TODAY... umm... you need to find explorer.exe and delete it. It is causing trouble with nox. Also somewhere in your "C:\" there's a "kernel32.dll" or something along the line. You need to update it. So delete it, and look on google for "QuakersWholeWheatGrain32.dll"

Can you give us the error message, or what happens when you play online?
Example: Ciritcal Error, Freezing, etc.
Also, what Nox version are you using and where did you get it?

Try this. Goto the downloads section and get the Westwood Online download. Install it. See if that fixes the problem.

I tried to install it the way it was described

So first the game, then the quest patch and then auto update.

Now i can login to wol but after about 15 seconds or so i get kicked out from wol with the message "YOu have been disconnected from Wol"

Anybody an idea why?

Did you try the alternative WOLAPI?
And you could also try using a different login name.
Try and see if there is a message in the lobby when you connect, that should give you the reason you are being kicked.

I tried the alternate westwood online installer now from zoad and get the same error.

when i enter it show the message:

Login to XCC failed

hey, ive tried the bit torrent link 4 nox, but all it does is send me to the login screen, i log in, and it sends me back to the main forum page.  any idea why?

I while ago I had a problem with Nox that at least one other person had with Win2K.

I installed Nox and NoxQEng12.exe and it tells me "You need to download the FREE Nox Expansion Pack from www.westwood.com in order to play a Nox Quest game." when I click to play the Nox Quest single player mode.

There is a quirk in Nox that causes this (incorrect and misleading) error message to appear. It happens with restricted user accounts but not with an administrator account. I don't know if Powerusers have the same problem or not.

Running the game as an administrator solves this problem. I have not tried to connect to Westwood for their patches because this worked for me and I wasn't going to apply patches that I didn't need.
(Actual results may vary.)

Installed game,
Downloaded and installed NoxQEng12.exe
Downloaded and installed XWIS

I can now connect to "Westwood Online" but it doesn't show anyone in the games list.  I checked the http://nox.guildgames.net/who.php?sort=server
Nox Players Online and it says they are playing.

I even tried to type the users name in myself (for Page User or Find User) and it says they aren't online.
I have no option to change servers, just the XCC WOL IRC Server which happens to be 195.13.63.187/195.13.63.187

How can I find other people to play with?

IIRC there is no XWIS installation. Try installing it again, but dont install XWIS, and see what appens.

i think he means he's using xwis, try reseting it... or just not using it.

Edit: Okay, I loaded up xwis again and selected "Reset (WOL)" rather then "Set (XWIS)" and it said there was an update of 109206 bytes.  It now is stuck at 100%.
It never told me about updates before

I'm screwed now, i tried to manually patch it and now it restarts my computer (after a prompt about patching) everytime I try to run NOX

Okay, I was able to get it to work by putting BOTH Nox.exe and game.exe in 98 compatibility mode
I have to run Game.exe because everytime I click on nox.exe it says it needs to restart my computer to patch nox.

Start over. Use the Nox Download linked in the picture in my signature. Since I know it isn't defective, there shouldn't be any problems with the steps it gives you.

Compatibility.. I think... 98? That really is something you can just trial and error until it works.

Also note, you have NO use for the Xwis tool. If you used that before you ever tried to go online, that would account for a couple things. When you uninstall Nox(save character files to your desktop if you really want to keep them) make sure you uninstall 'shared internet components'.

Compat should be on game.exe and set to 98/ME, after downloading the patches within nox, close nox, run nox.exe and it will apply the patches, after that just run game.exe to start nox or run the no-cd loader.

The guy got it to work. He should leave it as it is.

I have a problem, i posted it millions of times but "NOONE" knows what wrong. I can't host on nox, i have no firewall nor a router... so yeah wtf

You do have a firewall, you just don't know it.

I have a windows me. I got it in 1999. LOL. Yes go on, it sucks ass. I never had a firewall on it. When we just got cable for this computer, I could host fine, then we got another computer and changed modems and now I can't host. The other computer is XP, but why would it have anything to do with mine? They seem to be connected, but I don't want to fuck up the other computer

Now that you posted a little useful information, even though it just made your problem a little more conrfusing (so you have 2 cabel modems; one for each computer?)

 You know most cable modems come with some sort of firewall built in it I think, so you might need to fool around with some ports, only if you want your computer potentially open to the infected internet though.

No, changed modems. Two computers, one modem (other computer has wireless connection). Hi philly it's smiles. You know my problem, and I never did figure out why I can't host (NAT Firewall was on XP computer)

Do you have any kind of anti virus "suite" installed? Those often include a firewall.

Everything is on the other computer. Firewall, Anti-Spyware. Virus detector, but why would it interupt with mine and make it so I can't host? Even though both computer have same ip? Is that the problem? I have been ignoring the other computer, maybe I have to delete everything from it but i cant. haha

Err.. so 2 pc's hooked up to 1 connection? Doesn't that mean your have a router?

One is hooked with Modem, other has a usb wireless adapter where it gets it power from the signal the modem puts off.

I don't think you can host on a WAN.

ok when i try to download the ez all in one nox download pack in the download section it says that i am not allowed to download things off this page...so i re-login and it sends me out to the index...so i come back and try it agian. same thing. so i use the login at the top left of the screen...same thing, asks me to login again even tho i'm already logged in. Somebody in charge of the site plz fix that issue =]

Yea it's a strange bug with the SMF forum system (one that I personally have never encountered), couldn't find anything about it on the SMF site so it's not something I can fix right now.
Make sure you log in here http://www.noxforum.net/index.php and let it remember you.
You can also try using firefox just in case this is an IE issue.

Don't download stuff while hosting, shut down any progs you don't need, don't host on wireless.
That's pretty much all you can do to make it (a little) faster without getting a better connection, so yea you're probably screwed.

smiles "f12" is a single keyboard button, you don't hit "F" + "1" + "2"

it saves them in your nox folder as gifs, if you exit nox, start again and make more... it will copy over the old ones. So give them unique names.

Hi all I have not played Nox in about 6 months or so i would say, I kinda play on and off.. and Nox has changed alot since last time I played..

so, I just want to play Nox Multiplayer, I click on the first nox Download link i see in download seciton... its the Torrent one. I do everything the file says, and everything seems to be working fine, but then when i come back 1 hour later thinking my download is near half way at least, the download is not even at 2%. the time estimated left said 6+ days.... thats BS. So i went down the list and found the post by Zoaedk for the nox download manually... I went to that and found those 7 or so Nox Files. I then saw this link on the bottom that said it was only 200 MB and it says nox install... I have no idea what this file is, but im downloading it lol, the description I cant understand at all. I am thinking, is this a Multiplayer Only version? if so, well... cool :) since i am at 20% as of this post...

okay well there are way to many things a guy needs to do to get online for nox here, so can someone people just give me a rough understanding on what i need to download to play Nox on multiplayer? Do i need a CD? whats this WOLAPI.DLL thing everyone is talking about? last time i played, it said my serial was fake or something... can i fix that this time?

If you haven't played in Six months then you can wait six days(or get a better connection; or open ports; or drop firewall). The torrent has everything and it spells out everything you need to know to play online. So far, it has had a 100% success rate for people wanting to get online.

I havent played in 6 months because other games came up, and I want to come back. Also my computer has RAM problems, causing random but often blue screens so I would have to start the download over again...

I just want to play, online, and I don't want to wait 6 flippin' days... I never asked anything about the torrent I don't think, I just want to know what the 212 MB file on http://www.noxforum.net/index.php?topic=1389.0 is intended for, and if it is intended on what I think and hope it is for, how I can make it work.

Or, if the torrent is super good and has everything outlined, how do you make the download faster? I don't have Dial Up, I have DSL. When downloading manually, I go about 50 - 100 kb/s which is really poor, but when downloading on u.torrent i was getting 0.1 KB/S

The thing about torrents is that if the download is interrupted, you don't lose any data(at least I haven't yet).

All my firewalls are off, and I tried opening as many ports as possible, and my u torrent reached an all tiem low. it said 8 DAYS to download not nox, but the NERO thing thats only 80 MB... and nox download won't even go at all, its stuck at 0.0%

I never did like torrents... they just always took so long or fucked up when I used them.

They are an excellent way to get most files (like games / other software and also movies tv shows and music albums) and I have rarely had any slow downloads.
When you pick a torrent file just make sure there is a decent amount of seeds and properly configure your firewall / router and just put uTorrent (or whatever client you like) on for longer periods of time since torrents need to gain speed first.

I depend on torrents.. My connection sometimes cuts out because its wireless and my card can't find my router. When that happens whatever I was downloading is immediatly corrupt.

me personally, i love BitTorrent.  i use BitComet as my torrent client, and it is a lot better than downloading things normally.  since my net's hooked up to a router (physically, not wirelessly), i generally run into the problem of the power plug in the thing coming out, either by way of a clumsy relative, or a cat snagging it with thier tail.

Is anyone else having trouble with the Quest Download? And by trouble I mean the DL just isn't starting

"-serveronly -port # -clientport #" is common, just replace the '#' with actual port numbers that work for you. You don't need to use -serveronly.

Does "-window"/"-windowed" not work with NoCd?

It will allow you to set command line options to start nox with (including ports) through a GUI (makes things easier), nothing more, nothing less.

Because if your ISP blocked those ports on their end there is no way you can possibly open them so just change the ports nox uses to ones that aren't blocked.

Long version:

Apple computers can not run Nox.

Macintosh PPC computers (even those running Windows) can not run X86 software (like Nox) without an emulator.

Nox will only run on an OS running either a Windows OS Like NT/2K/XP or a Windows OE (Operating Environment) like WINE, Windows 95/98/ME. No, 95/98/ME are not operating systems, they are environments that run over DOS!

Also a computer that can understand x86 instructions are needed so a DEC Alpha (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DEC_Alpha) computer running windows would also fail. (Of course DirectX 7 would not have been supported by that version of Windows anyway.)

I've been trying to install nox for a long time in two computers. I get the games to run, and i put the WOLAPI.dll in, and updated, and everything else, but when I click to play multiplayer all it says is "Westwood online is not installed in this computer."

hey fellas..  just reinsalled nox after a 4 year break from it.. anyways...

i checked the search and everything.. 


i played online this morning and picked up some equipment for my conjurer.  now when i go to armor from a merchant is says "no arms info"  for practically any piece of armor.  crashes when i put the magnifying lens over it.  and even if its leather it says im not the right class.  same with pants and shirts.



this has probly been brought up before...  i asked online and they said i had hacked items.. so i sold everything on me and went on again naked and it still says no arms info.  any help?

Sounds like a thing.bin issue, though that shouldn't occur if you have just installed it. Suggestions anyone?

well no worries for the time being..   i got some more armor on.  but when i go on westwoods servers it starts acting up..  so me and my friends just do lan games.  still though.. itd be nice to go online.

I have this same error since yesterday and don't have a clue what's causing it, I checked some registry keys and they looked fine, couldn't find anything strange in nox or wolapi's files either.
Guess I'll need to reinstall some day, right now I can't be arsed.

If it isn't detecting WOL has being installed, you can try reregistering the dll.

Start->Run: regsvr32.exe C:\Westwood\Internet\Wolapi.dll

Change the directory to your respective WOL directory. Also there is a download on the forum that will reinstall WOL w/o using the Nox (or other Westwood) installers.

Simply brilliant, yet so simple, works now :D

Can someone please supply a new audio.bag? I believe mine is corrupt because the sound frequently stutters and sometimes the game even crashes (usually when I use a sword to hit metal).

After a long two hours of downloading audio.bag and audio.idx, I discover that the audio.bag and audio.idx were not corrupt. The audio at the main menu still stutters and hitting a wall enough times with the sword still crashes me.

Before I recieved the audio.bag I downloaded the latest drivers.

I reinstalled NoX, and the audio still stutters at the main menu, but I don't crash as a result of it. However, I am now seeing random lines, and messed up tiles (sometimes the SwampGrass tiles look like barf).

Maybe one of these days we should come up with a program that checks all of the Nox files against a hash/checksum value to figure out if a file is corrupted.

For Templar's problem the shotgun solutions would be to reinstall Windows and if that doesn't work he could buy a new computer.

hey everyone

im a noob here. wow i didn't realise that there was such an active community dedicated to nox. well anyway i've installed nox the same way as in the installation thread. the game runs however whenever i go to "Solo Game" a message keeps popping up saying "This game is only available in a primary installation". The "Solo Quest" and "Multiplayer" game modes however run fine. i was wondering if anyone had any idea on why i can't get into "Solo game"?

Hello, I'm new here. I use to play NOX all the time. I thought I lost the CD but found it recently and decided to give it a go. I installed it using a random key online and updated to Quests 1.2. I decided to play online and installed the WON patch to bypass cd key checking.
Anyway my problem is when registering I get the error, "General Error!" once I click on OK in the first menu. I took a quick look around here and didn't find anything on it.

I know my way around computers very well(Building em to Programming) and I know I have no firewalls blocking NOX, so any ideas?

i just found my nox cds and wanted to play a bit, but i cant run it.windows tells me there is a problem with game.exe and it must be shut down.wants to send a problem report, with the signature

yes, tried first with quest update, then reinstalled and tried without a patch, both with the same result.

edit:i used the hints given in the first post, change of compability mode and so on, it just changes nothing :-(

I did everything to get nox up and running, followed all the instructions, and still can't get into Westwood Online. It just gets stuck at "Connecting to Westwood..." I've tried everything this guide has told me, but to no avail

My first post on this forum, and unfortunately its a help request...

Despite my efforts I am unable to get Nox to work -at all-

Win2K system
Im admin
trying to run from a NTFS partition (pretty sure that makes no difference)
Zip file containing 'Nox.nrg' was checked for errors, none found,
Also i use Azureus as my torrent manager, and its never given me a corrupt file.


So I,

Got the torrent from the 'NoxInstallPack.zip' file, Downloaded the nero image, Mounted using daemon-Tools, and installed Nox,
Exited back to windows, and then ran nox.exe, immediately got :
"GAME.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.  You will need to restart the program."

Then read this thread, so…
uninstalled Nox,
Burnt the image to a CDRW (incase it didn’t like being run from a mounted image)
downloaded ‘NoxEng12.exe’ (1.77mb) and ‘NoxQEng12.exe’ (25.8mb)
restarted computer
installed Nox from CD
chose ‘exit to windows’ option at the end,
ran the ‘NoxEng12.exe’ (1.77mb) patch and got:
“Old File not found. However, a file of the same name was found. No update done since file contents do not match”
Crud,
So I tried the ‘NoxQEng12.exe’ (25.8mb) patch, got:
“Old File not found………”

Tried running ‘Nox.exe’, immediately got :
"GAME.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows.  You will need to restart the program."

Any suggestions?

I tried the "Nox1.2bNoCdL.exe" loader, didnt work, still got the same ""GAME.exe has generated......."

You don't need to use NOXQENG12.exe. The torrent version of Nox has the soloquest, patch, and such already part of it. (Hence it is giving the "file of same name found" message). If it wasn't included in the Nox install pack, you won't need it. Say again, if it was not included, you do not need it.

Could be a compatibility issue. Try running nox in differing compat modes.

That error is 'cuz im using ATIdriver from the HIS website. I think they got a custom install or somthing. I know its different from the one on the ATI site.

Odds are, if you don't know what XWIS is, then it isn't your problem.

Wierd. It says thats how I fix the no servers showing problem.

Try logging in with a different username. Sometimes that is the issue. The reason it isn't XWIS is because you have to use their program to have that problem.

I can only connect to WOL when my Nox is in safemode. Any idea how to fix this?

Keep trying diffrent Usernames, like random shit and stuff.  When I went in and told me that I didn't connect to XCC, that's really all it took.  But because I'm not an expert on how Noxxus works, I can't really add anything more than that.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Del and go to processes. Make sure Game.exe isn't running. Sometimes Nox will forget to end it's process and you have to close it.

Or you could restart your computer.

edit: i just noticed that you didnt complete the door on the right. theres a button there, drop something onto it and the door at which you were stuck will open. go through it and press the lever (i think there is one there).

Hi i have a weird problem.

I've used the noxinstaller file i downloaded from filefront and it installed Nox version 1.2b with quest. i've also used the Westwood online installer inside the zip and installed it fine.  However, when i go in the game, and when i click on multiplayer --> westwood online, it would give me the message that "Westwood Online is not installed on this computer"
Right now Nox folder and Westwood online folder are two separate folders, do i need to put them somewhere for Nox to recognize that i have westwood online installed? What should i do? Thanks for all possible help

Therefore read your router instructions and if you cant find it there then try

No the wol works fine in it's seperate folder, try installing WOL from an administrator account / the account you are using to run nox. If this doesn't work then uninstall wol and try again.

Well, I got a Nox CD, and i got Windows XP

I could install it, so why does it "require" win 9x???

Just put the disk in your pc, go to that drive, open setup.exe and you are installing it.

If all else fails, just download from us. It is easier and has better chance of working.

Better? Really? I have used the CD since day one and have never had problems. Honestly, I have seen more complaints and confusion about the download. I was trying to help someone download it (and he isn't computer illiterate at all) and he got confused.

HOW TO INSTALL NOX PROPERLY ON THE XP

1.) Install Nox (yea) [With full or any install options if you want]
2.) Do NOT start Nox yet
3.) Download and install the Quest patch
4.)Set the compatibility mode of GAME.EXE to win 98/ME

Now from this point you can try 2 things:

1.) Run nox.exe and connect to WOL
2.) Let it auto patch and it will restart your Nox

If this worked you can now play Nox

2nd thing you can try:
1.) Run "NOX.EXE GrabPatches" as a command line parameter (or go to your start menu / westwood / nox / Nox Auto Update)
If that works and finishes then start Nox.exe and it should all work

I am guessing it already has Quest with it because it says solo quest in my Nox game directory. So I'm assuming I don't have to download the noxenglish1.2b patch.

Whats happening to me is that for some reason I am getting the USA Games and all that jazz, I can see when I get to the giant chat window "Failed to log into XCC" so I looked for the download all over the place to make me get the XCC servers to show. I can't find the thing any where, its really hard when I don't know what I'm looking for.

what was weird is on my friends computer he is able to select the XCC server, when he gets Nox Games after logging in.

I got USA games and I'm in XCC lol. Kinda weird I guess.

Not really, he probably has C&C installed and has the wol.dll file patched to auto connect. Choosing xwis is no longer required and you won't even see the other servers when you do that.

i think a general solution to all compatability issues would be to dual boot with xp, but i have no idea about your original question.

I am able to run Nox fine with Vista. If you install it and it doesn't work, just set the compatibility mode to XP or something.

i got vista and xp, started with xp...

Try finding a partion creator... (i used partition magic) this way you can create 2 parts of a drive which makes 1 drive look like 2.
When u did that, push the vista/winxp instalation disk in your drive and install it on the newly created partition.
It automatically creates (at leats it did for me) a boot loader so you can choose wich operating system you boot.

look into partions if you want dual boot. you'll find more info there...

Also you can create as much partitions as you like ( i once had 7 operating systems >< )...

Stick with Vista. It works and it is better overall. Especially now that ATI has decent drivers out for it.

Problem with vista is, pg2 hasnt released a version that works on vista, so you cant dload anything safely.

Sure you can. Just download from better places. Bittorrent is always good, but I know that some DC hubs use the PeerGuardian databases to blocks people from joining.

Bittorrent is prolly the worst place to dload from, I got caught once, scared the shiznet out of me, i started running pg2 and havnt been caught since, I highly recommend you all not dload anything without it running.

If I plan on dual booting, how large would the extra partition need to be for the os to run smoothly.

40 gigabytes would be enough for vista or xp, but you might just want to cut your hard drive in half so xp and vista both got the same space...

if you think you got to small space, ypou can also just change the poartitions and cut something from xp and give it to vista, and vice versa.

If you downloaded the game from www.noxhub.net then you need to download the music seperate, I did not package them together becuase it makes the download MUCH larger.

Just wondering if you can help.  This started happening today, when I try logging in to your server, I keep getting a connection problem error message:

"Internal Error Timeout waiting for connection acknowledgement"

I'm able to login okay in other people's server and have been in your server several times as well in the past.

I'm not sure it's weird again it just started happening today, just wondering if you can help?

I'm not sure what is causing this, several player have had the problem.

I tested once on my home connection (seperate from my dedicated server) and it did the same thing.

I looked into the xwis forums and a few of the C&C guys have been complaining about it as well. I'm going to wait a bit and see if thats the problem or not..since nothing on my actual server has changed.

I would like to know though, how many of you that are having problems are using their original installation instead of the download?

then the no-cd thing, now how do i play online? starting westwood online register.exe takes me to a website that says "register" server not found or something

When i try running the nocd crack i get an error, it's a general windows error and leads me to a file that is sent to microsoft to explain the problem in a language only an engineer can understand.

BUT when i run the game.exe it works but asks for me to put the disk in.

I have tried uninstalling and running everything in different compatability modes and color modes.

The only thing that i think will work is if i mount the disk image and run it that way.

If anyone has it please pm me.

put the nocd crack in your westwood\nox directory and create a shortcut to the crack on your desktop. Use that.

Even if i use that copy of the nocd crack (the one in the nox directory folder) an error occurs.

Can only help you if you list what the error is.

no, but i have nox on my other computer and i used the easy download. It runs fine, quest mode and all.

Quest shouldn't interfere with the nocd crack. If some one has the disk image please speak up.

Quest is required for the NoCD crack to work.

(no cd cracks generally are modified .exes, the nox no-cd is a modified quest .exe and requires the correct quest files).

It's fine now actually, i downloaded a torrent and mounted the disk image and now it works.

But i did delete the nox files thinking i didn't need them. So now i just need a new serial code.

type your IP adress into your url and hit enter, then a command box should pop up asking for a password, it is usually set to 'admin' by default, once you enter that the page where it is possible to forward ports should pop open and your set to go, either im right or im being completely retarded but its been a long day so w/e trey my idea

Also guard is a newbie kid who plays with trainers too much, he's not hacking in the strict sense. Only hosts can modify the servers though and all of the 100- servers are unmodified (with the exception of ladder and it's recording program).

I just installed NOX from the original cd that I found lying around because I remembered how awesome the multiplay was.  I have some problems getting online though.  It logs on and sends me to the basic chat room, but after a minute or two, it just logs me right off.  What gives?

Thats just your local are network (LAN) speed, thats the speed between your computer and your modem / other computers. Your actual internet speed would be FAR lower then that value (to a possible 1/100 or less).

When I login there are three servers to choose from. Well, one problem I have is that not long after I've connected to WOL I am disconnected. :? If you are getting disconnected, try using a different username. Yours is likely taken.

So I just installed the latest drivers for my GeForce 7300 GT (162.18) and now game.exe crashes everytime I try to start Nox. I've tried the compatibility modes but nothing works. Has anyone else had this problem?

Alright, I have recently installed Nox as I intend to start playing again. However I have run into a slight problem. The update that the Westwood server provided only bumps me up to version, 1.2 . However, I need to get to version 1.2b if I am to play with the rest of the world.

Question: Where do I go to download the patch? Linkage?

Your new driver might not support directx mmx, thats not really fixable by you....so zeezo would be correct.

Hello, hello, a friend and I are trying to trouble shoot a problem I'm having with this.

Anyway, I follow the guide but I run into a snag: Quest patch won't install. It gives me an error saying "Missing or invalid registry/ini entry." Also, when I start the game anyway, the screen is just black. I can here the sparkles when I click my mouse and I can hear myself generally interacting with the menu interface, but it's just a black screen.

Any ideas? I would love to be able to play Nox again.

edit: I tried what Pun tried up there and rolled back my driver. All fixed! Flawless!

Hello, let me first say that it's completely awesome that this community exists.

Now - i'm having a problem.  I've installed nox (from my CD) and i've run the nox quest installer from this board.  I'm running Nox.exe in compatability mode and I entered a username/password and downloaded a patch.  Now, this is the problem.  When I try to connect again, it downloads another patch and it gives me this message before stopping:

I've tried the solutions posted, and while running the nox update, it tells me that there are no available patches.  Why am I downloading a patch that never patches if there are no updates?  The only strange thing, though, is that when I exit Nox after "patching" it updates game.exe and then restarts Nox, only to patch again if I try to connect..

I've restarted and reinstalled.. this is so very annoying :(


For some reason, Nox decided to lock up.  Upon inspecting the Windows Task Manager (so I could close Nox) I noticed there were FIVE nox executables running (for some reason they don't stop running after I exit the program?) and after closing them all down, the patch apparently decided to apply.  Quest, here I come!

When I load Nox, I get a black screen, if I click I can hear the sound that the game makes when you click on the menu screen. I can actually navigate around the menu via mouseover sounds (a little bit).

If I have game.exe set to compatability with 98, I get a "has encountered an error and needs to close". If I don't have it set to compatible, the above happens.

hi im new and used to play nox like six years ago and recently got the craving to play again.... i saw that there are servers up and i tried logging on to them but the game crashes everytime.  it says game.exe has stopped working...

i did all the steps like change the compatability mode.... if someone could help me or direct me step by step on what to do that would be most appreciated... thanks so much!

Like Joining a game? You might have corrupt character files.

Delete the character you created and make a new one.
If you can't delete from ingame go here

C:\Westwood\Nox\Save (default directory)

you're probably not connecting to xwis, and when you don't it disconnects you shortly after.
sometimes you just have to try a couple different usernames and passwords until it lets you in.
also, don't save your login.

You don't have the correct password for the username. If you check the top of chat when you first connect it will state "incorrect username or password", use a new one or find the right password.

I just downloaded NoxInstall and installed it.

have you tried setting compatiblity on both nox.exe and game.exe to win98?

That is again probably those new Nvidia drivers, run it in windowed mode and compat set to 98 and it will work fine.

Nvidia no longers seems to support full screen directx <6 or MMX or something...dunno, but you have to run it in windowed mode, go to the omega drivers (possibly, can't test this theory myself) or downgrade drivers.

No. There's something wrong with CD crack included with NoxInstall, or the copy of the game itself. I just found my old Nox CD and installed and played it fine; all I had to do was use compatibility mode. I didn't have to play it in a window, reduce the colors to 256, et cetera. It's also worth noting that a while back I downloaded the CD image of Nox via a torrent, mounted it, installed it and played it using compatibility mode with no trouble either.

So I've tried installing nox and setting the .exe's campatability to 98/ME, before -and- after installing WO.exe,..I've referred to the support posting and read it over and over and I still can't even open Nox. I get the error report every time i completely uninstall/reinstall nox and all it's components, and I have even tried to download possibly uncorrupted files from the alternative links given.

i have an Nvidia card, but I tried running it in window mode, etc. Reading the error report doesnt help either :P
a friend of mine downloaded nox and it worked fine and simple for him, he could not help me with any questions. What could I be missing!??

Just to clarify, you made sure you have the latest Nvidia drivers? (Not sure if they even work, someone confirm?)
Also, when you installed it, on your first try, did you use a CD or the NoxInstall.exe?

I have ran noxinstall.exe several times, to test the game.exe and the Nox.exe on first try, and have downloaded the lastest drivers for my card.
Just wanna make sure im doing this right -

1) run Noxinstall.exe, which includes the westwoodonline.exe
2) make .exe's compatible
3) install quest. was noted earlier that quest patch was included in the noxinstall.exe, but I have tried installing Q regardless. I get the error: Missing or invalid registry/INI entry

I cant find any other way to patch, and the link to the Rtp_Patcher for a manual attempt isn't working either
I shall keep tinkering!

Also the noxinstall.exe comes with quest and all the up to dat patches, you won't be able to patch over that.

I started a thread in Downloads about my issue, and I now realize I should have posted it here. Whenever I try and install the zip files for dialog and sound (in the easier nox download thread), it just sends me to a blank page with no options. Any help would be appreciated.

I recently downloaded NoX. Everything is working fine the only problem I have with it is when I click on Solo and want to play my saved game. I select it and click Load and it won't do anything and stays at the loading screen. Any suggestions?

I think your map file is corrupt, or it is your character file. Your best best is to get a new map file of the area you're loading (i think)?

you probably will have to delete char. try map first though.

on the hosting issues section it says to enter nox's udp port, i followed all of the instructions on the site but i cant figure out where to enter the port at can you tell me?

yes. I've tried the compatability with all exe's i tried putting it in windowed mode [-window or -swindow I tried both] and it still comes up with "game.exe has had a problem and had to FUGGIN CRASH BWAHAHAH" error.  it got me pretty mad last night

Hello, I just reinstalled nox.  i have the compatibility mode set ujp as windows 98, and patched to 1.2, with nox quest.  however, i have no sound.  looking for help

As this thread seems to be the most active one regarding problems, I decided to post here.

My problem is, I can't get the Nox Quest _installed_.
To help you help me, I will post the bare facts:

Game
  Format: Original, 3 CDs - Manual, Disc 1 & Disc 2
  Box: Generic game DVD box
  Current version: 1.1

System
  OS: Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2
  Computer: Intel Core 2 Duo
  Graphics card: nVidia GeForce 8600 GTS, driver ver. 6.14.11.6218

Installation
  Location: Drive F:\ (out of a total of 3 harddrive partitions - C, E & F)
    Specifically: F:\mängud\Westwood\Nox
  Patching: WOLA downloaded a patch the first time around, but didn't manage to install it. The next two times it just claimed inability to connect to patching server(s) at all.
  Multiplayer patching: Nox Quest patching failed on all three tries, more info below.

Steps taken to fix problem
  First try: Installed Nox and ran it just after the installation. Screen went black and Windows was "forced to shut the program down". Tried patching through WOLA - got 1 patch, but program failed
     to install it. Tried installing Nox Quest, but failed - program aborted update (links to images below). Running NOX.EXE still failed - Windows was "forced to shut the program down".
  Second try: Reinstalled Nox and DID NOT run it after installation. Set compatibilities for both GAME.EXE and NOX.EXE to 98/ME, colors set to 256 for NOX.EXE. Installing Nox Quest failed - program
     aborted update. Patching through WOLA failed again, but this time no patch got downloaded at all. Tried running NOX.EXE by itself, but it still didn't work - Windows was "forced to shut the
     program down".
  Third try: Clean install of Nox (uninstalled first), DID NOT run it after installation. Compatibilities already set to 98/ME from last time (where was this information stored? O.o), but unchecked 256 color
     mode for NOX.EXE - instead I set Color Quality to 16-bit from Desktop->Properties->Advanced. WOLA patching failed ("unable to connect"), no patch downloaded, nothing installed. Installing Nox
     Quest failed - program aborted update again. Tried running NOX.EXE (with -swindow) by itself, now it just triggers the WOLA patching sequence, but without connecting to the Westwood Online
     server(s). Tried running GAME.EXE by itself - worked. Seems that solo play is now possible through GAME.EXE.


So, the questions remain:
 I) what have I done or not done that Nox Quest simply does not want to be installed?
 II) how, if at all necessary, can I get WOLA to patch/where can I get WOLA patches from?

I have a problem when trying to run NoX...  When I start it, it gets to the title screen, but crashes right before it hits "Click to Continue"...  I've re-installed it twice already...  And changed the compatibility to every possible value.  Most queer, hmm?

did you also delete your char and map files?

I moved them to another partition...  I may try re-installing it yet again... Third time's the charm, after all!  :-D

Hi everyone here, im new to this forum... so well thats not what matters now...

the fact is that i searched for instructions and patchs/cracks to join the nox server and i have several plroblems, let me explain:

After reading almost half the forum i proceeded by what i finded out in the forum (i downloaded the quest update and the game english update, and instaled them, first the engupd and then the queupd) i opened the game (noticing first that i no longer have music or movies) then i went to the server, placing as username "zleid" and a password (login directly, not registering), and the problem arent that i cant see the games, the problem is that it seems like i can see them, but i cant join a game (and as it seems, no one can join my games)

The windows firewall is unlock and i have forwarded the ports according to the information that i have found here... i have tried everything and it doesn´t work...

well, if someone can help me, ill be thankfull... BTW, sorry for the lame english.

the only time ive ever had this issue with being able to join games was an instance of game.exe still running in my process list. this caused all my join attempts to timeout. however, nox still said it connected, and then hung for a minute or so until it gave me the timeout message.  a quick ctrl+alt+delete solved this, make sure there is only one game.exe running, for those of us who close nox via alt+f4, this is the problem.

ive tried everything on here compatability mode and all, ive downloaded and installed the game and when i starti it i see the westwood video and the nox game logo then it crashes. anything else i can try. this version already has quest installed and im in 98/me compatability mode.

I've followed the instructions for getting Nox to run properly on XP, but when i start nox itll play the Westwood online thing, and then the Nox with the sword going through it, the mace thing will swing a few times and then it will just flicker, the nox music plays but i cant see any menus and if i left click anywhere ill get a crash and Nox will close, anyone else getting this problem or know of a solution?

I wuold know how do you play Nox in multiplayer: do you use HAMACHI (it's a program for PC) or the Westwood server? because when I click to  "multiplayer" and than I click on "wetwood online", the game isn't able to connect to server.

ok, I reinstalled everything, this time I didn't patch. My screen resolution is 1024x768 and I had my refresh rate at 75 hertz. When I did this and started Nox I would get a black screen, but I would be able to hear the mouse sounds and the clicking. I lowered my refresh rate to the lowest it would go and the intro would play, but after the sword went through the Nox logo, it would flicker, but I would still hear the mouse sounds if I clicked.

I downloaded the full install and after running the game, I get the no cd error.
I have it in compatibility mode and 16 bit color and stuff..  if that matters.
i've also tried to download the nocd thing, but it comes to some foreign site that I can't read?  clicked the links too and all it does is send me to its homepage i guess.

I can get to the chat screen but on the left where it announces things it says "login to XCC online failed" and my username and password is the same, i have the quest.... i want to play online :*(

Did you try a random username/password that you know no one else would use?

If not, try that to make sure it isn't the username/password you used.

HEY GUYS i really need some help here.
Okay so i am running windows xp and i've downloaded your nox thing the esier one so many times.
I'm installed and uninstalled it many times and it hasn't helped.  I set the compatability to windows 98/me.
So none of that worked so i got the files directly from my brothers and it still doesn't work. 
whenever i try to play it, i always get this message saying that it needs to shut down, sorry for the inconvienince.
SO i really want to play on these servers with my brothers but i can't until i get the game up an running so could you guys help me please

okay... i tried doing the nvidia thing in 16-bit, i can now see the nox cursor for like a split second.  But then it shuts down and give the same shitty excuse

mmkay do you mean in the explorer bar or what. because i typed that both ways in the explorer bar and it still doesn't work.  I'm thinking maybe there is something that is not letting my program run. When i run the thing and the error comes up i go click on the technical information, the place that it shows is C:\DOCUME~1\funkyguy\LOCALS~1\Temp\7ba_appcompat.txt

Should i delete that or should i clear out all of my Temp folder because that is just a Temorary folder.

Okay so i just went looking for that file in the directory it said it was in and now it isn't there
And i also just checked and it is hidden, i can't find it.  The search function on windows could not find it either.
So i think the file dissapeared but i dont' know why it would.

Im having the same problem as FunkyGuy. I just installed the NoxInstall.exe and I put the Music, Movies, and Dialog in my Nox directory which is C:\Program Files\Nox.     I have an Nvidia 7800 and I set the "Color Quality" to Medium(16bit) and turned on Compatibility Mode to Windows 98/ME. When I first start the "Shortcut to Nox1.2bNoCdL.exe" which is on my desktop, the WestWood movie comes up and the Nox intro comes after, which is the sword and little flail thing. I press Space Bar to skip, but it goes black, and I get the- "Game .exe has encountered a problem and needs to close Sorry for the inconvenience."

I recently downloaded and installed Nox from the "easiest download" in the downloads sections. When I play it takes several presses of a key for anything to register. This includes everything except typing: Casting spells, changing spell pages, and even opening up the menu via Escape. Its pretty much a game breaking bug. Does anyone have any solutions? I have been playing Nox perfectly fine for the past two weeks, but now every time I attempt to join a server, when I click the "Join" button. The game freezes. No Errors or anything, just freezes. I can Ctl Alt Del out of it, but that is about it. I am using an Nvidia GPU, but I already did everything that is needed to fix the Nvidia problem, hence why I could play for the past weeks.

Anyone have any idea? This just all of a sudden started happening. I even re-installed Nox from the download here.

You have a corrupt character file, make a backup of your current characters and delete them 1 by 1 from the save spot until you can join a server. Then place all but that ONE character back into your save, recreate the one that was bad, and enjoy.

Is the problem that your screen looks all fucked up or that you have a disc read error?

I think its the disk read error, the screen messed up might be from a vid cam. if you ever need to fix that turn steady shot off or to widescreen.

I knew I should've typed something along the lines of "ignore the error" to avoide confusion.

It's the sceen glitch, that's how it actually looks, no camera problems there.
Is there a fix for that?

Also I feel that I should elaborate a tad.
This screen glitch happens only when I run the game, cinematics are all fine and dandy.
I've tried changing my rosolution, compability and other things, but nothing worked.

I also use a GeForce 8600 GT graphic card, if that contributes anything to the understanding of the problem. I have all the latest drivers, so that can't be the issue.

On the contrary that probably IS the issue. Lately the problem with video has been growing. New cards/drivers don't mix well with Nox.

There may be a fix, but its better to find the solution at your manufacturer's support forum.

Yeah the main problem is NVIDIA's shit graphics drivers.

(create the "Patches" directories if they do not already exist) Now run Nox.exe and it should automatically patch itself with these rtp files you just placed in the directories (The second .rtp file updates the WOL client software, but nox.exe handles that too.)

Got it to work, have no clue how, it just started to work.


On a side note, playing video games on a laptop blows, especially nox, my sucking cock at the game after not playing for so long is just compounded by the compact keyboard.

Im just too cheap to buy a usb mouse for my laptop so i never play.

Apparently I can't play any saved games. I'd click load and nothing happens, and if I try to go back afterwards, nothing happens.. So I end up having to press Alt+F4 to get out of Nox

And through the breaks that would have cutscenes (Or that's what I'm assuming) the game crashes.

Distribution, if you have the downloaded one then download and install the movies.zip to see the cutscenes, if you have a disk it sounds like the disk is going bad, so download the download instead because it is better in every way.

Ah right, I took your advice and just downloaded everything and put it in the correct directory.

But, it's still not working. So I'll just resort to uninstalling it and reinstalling it.

I am nearly 58 years old and live in Sonora, KY.  I am playing the single player game as Conjurer and am stuck at the locked door in the lower level of the dismal swamp below the Ogre camp in the room where several mimics were and there are rotating sections of spikes around the floor.  The northwest door says "locked by mechanism" but I have thrown the switch in the nearby room and the door won't open.  Anyone have a suggestion?

Yes, I can't get the door to open that leads to the pens of creatures just before getting to the snow covered section leading to the Land of the Dead.  I am stuck in the circular room with the rotating spikes where the mimics were.  I played NOX to the end of all three characters several years ago and am just getting back into it again.  I'd really hate to start the Conjurer game again when I'm about 3/4 through it.  Please get someone to help me!

open the console by pressing f1, type rocoiaws, press enter

then use the move cheat to get where you need to

I never figured out how to use that cheat. I couldn't specify the coordinates or whatever never found out how.

There's a command that tells you what your X and Y coordinates are.

I don't remember what it was called.

i think the command is "cheat move #### ####"

there might be a comman there in between the coords

I've used the money cheat and it works fine.  I think you mean "cheat goto x y" but I don't know what coordinates I'm at or what they would be on the other side of the locked door.  If you guys could talk to other mods/players and give me some specifics here I believe this is the solution I've been looking for.   I'd be grateful!!

there is a command you can use in nox, i think its "info"
you might need to use racoiaws too.

It will show you your coordinates

if info isn't right try "help" or "help cheat"

it was cheat help i believe.

I can host games and people can join.

But.. I can not join any other game.

Ports are open.

Anyone have this problem?

You need to login with a new user name / password, sounds like you are using an old one and it won't show you the server list because it will kick you in a few seconds.

Today i find a cd image to my old game nox and i tried to play it but i have a problems about this game.

When i tried to install the game a error message appears "Please insert cd rom disc" but i already mounted image with Daemon Tools.

After than i found a rar file with named GAME1 and i extracted files into my computer. I clicked the exe and game is opened but this time same problem "cannot locate cd"

what can i do ?

Do not try to click the register button the way you would normally start an account.

Simply, type in your username (make sure it is completely new/no one would have used it before) and then make up a password.

If you get kicked then try another username.


I guess its about time to update this guide...oh wait...

Lately I've been playing some Nox, but i was wondering how to get the Lan to work so my friend and i can play together.

I downloaded the patch on both computers, for some reason we can both join other people's games, but we can't have one of us host a game, and the other join. I believe neither of us can host a game and that is the issue. Also, my friend's login to westwood online as any user does not have the chat channels if that is of any importance. Please fill me in if you have any ideas!

The chat channels don't work anymore, as for your other questions someone else will have to answer that.

There is a workaround for hosting and connecting to a local network/same computer. Someone explained how, but I can't recall exactly what prevented it.

You have to modify the server IPs on the public server list with memory editing to list local host instead of the actual ip.

How do you do that Morden ? Is there an easy way to do it?

You have to use a process editing tool or program, no-one ever got around to making their own program for it since it isn't a common problem so we just used winhack to edit the server information in the process.

If it is straight lan games it should work fine though, it sounds like you are trying to play together on the internet from the same lan address?

Search for the game name and find the IP address in the process memory and change it from the IP to the text: localhost

You can also change a different game that is already up to localhost and it will connect to your server instead. You could do it with a packet filter, but that is more involved.

Hey I installed the game from the forums, everything went smoothly until i tried to open it and it came up with: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

I have Windows 7, i tried running compatibility, and running as an Admin, and even tried to fiddle with the Firewall but it came up with the same problem every time. Is there another NO CD crack I can download or am I screwed...?

there should be a no cd crack that is comes with the installer that is from this site.

When you use the "Easier nox download" you don't need a no cd crack. Just run the game.

I do run it normally with the download provided in the Easier Nox Download, but it still comes up with that message. I searched the problem in past topics and only one came up with very unhelpful messages saying the file was possibly blocked by a firewall. "Nox1.2bNoCdL.exe"

I saw NoCd in the file name and assumed it was a no cd crack.

Is this the extension? With the hecubah icon or a little grenade?

If its the little grenade make absolutely sure you have administrator rights.

My firewall exceptions do not even have NOX, unless it is actually "game"

Oh shit, do you have AVG anitvirus? It flags the installer package and nocd.exe and immediately quarantines it.

I'm pretty sure I don't have AVG. The file is unblocked/allowed with my Firewall. It's just the regular Hecubah icon on my desktop after the install and that is the file extension as well. Any ideas...?

Try running it from your NOX directory.

Make absolutely sure you have admin rights.

If all else fails, uninstall the game, Then re-install by right clicking the installer and running the installer as admin.

I tried reinstalling it as admin, didn't work. I checked the permissions controls and everything had full control, however I don't have the grenade icon and I cant change the compatibility in the directory.

I really thing your antivirus is blocking the file. Windows 7 probably installed  Microsoft security essentials antivirus program if you have done all the updates, maybe you need to check and see if it is flagging the file...

I have 64-bit windows 7 with security essentials and I run the no cd crack without a problem and without any compatibility settings.
I only made an exception for nox when I started playing it and my firewall popped up a dialogue box asking me If i want to unblock it (game.exe).

I did however install from the cd first.

I recommend a full wipe and reinstall.
If you don't have quest and are not at v1.2 then get it here: //ftp.westwood.com/pub/nox/updates/NoxQEng12.exe
Then dl http://noxhub.net/Downloads/Nox1.2bNoCdL.exe
and put it in the same directory as your nox.exe/game.exe.

Make a shortcut to the no-cd exe on your desktop. Try playing.

Recently re-installed the game on new rig running Windows 7 64 bit

Running official bought disc with real serial, have tried using crack and same problem still occurs

Everything runs fine, game runs fine except when trying to play online.

Me and my brother are having issues playing online on a hosted game, it always says timed out trying to connect to server. And also nobody else can join our hosted games. I have forwarded all of the ports, disabled windows firewall, and enabled DMZ.
I cannot install WinHack because I have a 64-bit version of windows 7.
Can somebody help?

You can't join a server that's hosted in the same house online. For some reason.

I never had that problem. Anyways, make sure you have a static IP adress, that fixed everything for me.

Nox often chrashes with me; frozen screen and looping sound.

This often happends when I quit a multiplayer game, but also in general (for example in single player mode when I'm running around).

Any idea what causes this problem?

I don't have a video.bin file in my nox folder at all right now. It seems to be missing completely. And when I try to extract the files from the NoxInstall.zip file I get a couple of error messages.

I still have my hard copy, but the FTP server of Westwood seems to be offline, so I can't download the 1.2 update.

Is there still a working link to the 1.2 update, or another mirror to the NoxInstall.zip file? Or perhaps a .zip file containing the video.bin file, so I can place it in my nox folder?

Apparently you are ignoring all of the Nox 2 stuff because you answered a bunch of stuff last night on almost ever other topic so I am asking it here.

The download file for Nox 2 was removed from media fire. i would really like to download the newest version please put it back up.

The newest version (as I stated in the official support thread) is the SVN download of the files to compile it.

There is no install and play build and I haven't touched it in awhile.

Hello everyone!

I have a proble :D

My Nox installation (windows 8.1) was running ok, since i tried to modify video options!
I clicked on the first line in the Video options in-game and suddenly the game started flashing like a strobo.
Tried to relaunch, "Nox" intro screen flashing.
Reinstalled everything -> same thing.

What the hell can i do do deactivate manually that damned option?! The game is nice, because the sound is ok, if i move the cursor i can hear sound from buttons and also if i click somewhere!

If you changed the screen resolutions right click on your nox link properties compatibility and check 640/480 resolution. Thats what stopped my flashing.

I did not changed the resolution, just activated the first "tick" in the video options screen :( is there any .ini file from where i can change those options manually?

EDIT: may that tick be "unlocked DX surfaces"? i've found an image where that one is the first displayed! (http://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/File:Nox_Options.png)

Hey I'm having a lot of trouble hosting a server.

I went through all the guides and have everything working as it should except my friends can't connect to my server that I hosted on the westwood online network. It shows up but when they connect it just times out. I forwarded the port mentioned in one of the guides 18590. I feel like I'm missing a proper port or something. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm working to make my Nox playable online...

Before reading all instruction I found in the forum, I tryed to install the "NoxQuestEnglish" and "NoxEng1.2" in Westwood folder, but a danger window sayed "Problems Installing quest after update. Old File not found. However a file of the same name was found. No update done since filename and content do not match!". I found an explanation topic of this problem, but I don't understand what exactly I have to do: restarting computer and re-installing nox are ok, but what about the 2 patches? How can I find "englishnonquest" patch and the other "quest" mentioned in that guide? Are those the same I tryed to install at first?

(A little before the guide i saw (it's Nox forum -> Nox -> Help/Support Board -> List of common problems) i read about a link where I can download an english quest...but the link brings me to a page which not exist now!)

So...what can I do?
