Title: Easier NoX Download
Post by: Morden Tral on December 11, 2006, 04:09:58 am
Link is active again, download hosted by a filesharing company now. Immortal was kind enough to pay for a membership so we get unlimited downloads and the file is never deleted.

*Warning* This file should only ever be used if you lost your original legit copy of the game. You are legally allowed to backup or restore a copy you originally owned. The game is still available for purchase on the market, you should support it in any way possible as long as it is.

Download: NoxInstall.zip (http://www.filefactory.com/file/5a3b30)
Mirror: NoxInstall.zip (http://www.club.cc.cmu.edu/~awesie/NoxInstall.zip)

Size: 221 mb
Code:

ec3226feb4ae067da5599ca603c3480f *NoxInstall.zip

NoxInstall.msi  (Thanks to zoaedk)

WolInstall.exe (installs westwood online)

Everything you need to play the game solo and multiplayer, the only things missing are the intro and cutscene videos and the music (normal game sounds are included). The videos will be up on the www.noxhub.net website eventully anyway.

*REEDIT* Zoaedk mentioned that he packaged the NoxInstall.msi with quest included, so you shouldn't need to use the quest patch. I now removed it from the .zip.

EXPANSION

Size: 60.3 mb

www.noxhub.net/Downloads/MUSIC.zip (http://www.noxhub.net/Downloads/MUSIC.zip)

As mentioned in the first post of this topic,
"so you shouldn't need to use the quest patch"
Which means that quest and updates are already installed. Which means they will fail if you try to install them again.

EDIT: Never mind, it didn't work in Firefox but it worked in Internet Explorer.

Hmmm... Since nobody can't seem to join a server i create, I tried to Dl this Nox..
However I seem to get the same problem as the others.
Info:

Installed to Default Folder (D:/Program Files/Nox)
Same counts for westwood

Dled Dialogs and music afterwarts and pasted those in my Nox Instal Dictory.

Since its already updated, i didn't aply any updates, Once I click te NoCd exe, I get a black screen and an error report.
I've got no idea what the problem is, i probally did something dumb again.
Might anyone have a solution?

Ps: Sorry for my English.. it sucks... atleast... I think..

EDIT: nvm, forgot that the search button existed =)

This solution is already out there but seeing as many people would probably go to this thread and just download/install the game they would check here.

Solution:

Go to Nox\Nox1.2bNoCdL.exe
Right click Nox1.2bNoCdL.exe and copy
Go to your desktop and right click paste shortcut
Right click on the shortcut and click properties
Add -window after the last quotation (")

Mine would be "C:\Program Files\Nox\Nox1.2bNoCdL.exe" -window

To run nox now you must change your display to 16bit by right clicking on your desktop and properties, settings and changing color quality.

when i try to download, the "Easier Nox Download" it takes my computer say 1 hour to download it then once it does, I double click the .exe and hit extract, and it gives me a error reply, (I currently can not tell you exactly what it says because I deleted it out of anger, but I'm redownloading it, and will edit this to say what it says asap.   I then tried as many other ways to download, I tried one of someone elses (the one that has a password which he said was noxforum.net which didn't work for me it said invalid password) then I tried the big ziped one that has Utorrent and all the different download, and that one worked and i finally got nox to install and then as soon as it installed i clicked "i would like to play nox now" after the Westwood Logo and the cutscene the whole No\ shows up and the sword goes thew the \ to make a X, when i click on that screen or the animation ends Nox just flashes between that screen and black extremely rapidly IDK if there is anything i can do to fix that, or if the Nox game itself in that Zip was f'd up... i miss this game so much and lost my CD and would do anything to play it again thanks in advanced for your help and putting this up for download!

that is what happens when I try extracting the "Easier Nox Download"

here is the detailed Error Report
"Extracting to "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temp\wzde99\"
Use Path: yes   Overlay Files: yes
Extracting NoxInstall.exe
Error:  invalid compressed data to inflate"

WinRAR

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download
Post by: SirDandZ on July 29, 2008, 12:01:15 am
this didn't work either, the files finally worked, when i used winrar and when i installed them everything went well, then when i click on nox to play it just shows a black screen. I was reading around before posting this and saw other places that someone said to go in and add -windowed  and then change my settings to medium(16 bit)  and i tried that and still just showed a black screen, when i Alt F4, or ctrl alt del it away it comes up with the error, screen that has
Debug, Send Error Report, Dont Send Error Report.

its the one that shows up anytime an error happens so i believe there is no need for a print screen if you think one would be helpful let me know and ill add on asap

Fixed :D

I would like to suggest the addition of a par2 file, to this download (specifically the installer).

http://www.quickpar.org.uk/ (http://www.quickpar.org.uk/)

That program makes par2 files. They are advanced recovery files that can recover missing parts, anywhere in a file, equal to the size of the recovery file itself. Amazing!

The reason I request this is because I've now had two failed downloads. They finish just fine (with dl manager) but the archive turns up corrupt. Using a semi slow connection, it's a bit of a pain to redownload all the time - and probably a waste of whomever's bandwidth too.

A small par2 file, maybe five in size should do, just add a few slices in it and it's smooth sailing.

My 2 cents. Oh, and thanks for this. Nox is a seriously awesome game!

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download
Post by: Morden Tral on September 19, 2008, 11:44:46 am
Why don't you try NOT using download manager if you don't want corrupt files?

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download
Post by: zzenn on September 19, 2008, 01:07:19 pm
I did! Twice from my browser. Then I tried a download manager (net transport), in case it was my browser that gave issues. Same problem.
It was just a suggestion to help folks on a slow dl who might get a corrupt file - plus save you some bandwidth. No need to get angry.

And for the record, I practically never have corrupt dls otherwise.

Edit: The fourth attempt, with dl manager (set to one thread), from the other mirror finally arrived uncorrupted.

Thanks for the nox goodness :)

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download

You'd need an original german copy of the game for that to work I think, because the text files differ. We had a thread here somewhere with some of teh text files for various languages for the game, not sure if german was one of them.

Switching what to unicode? Nox always supported unicode, Just the English Font they used didn't have enough characters to display it.

I know in starcraft, in order to see Korean characters, you need to tell windows which language to put non-unicode programs in. It is probably similar for Nox.

Hi, I owned a copy of Nox about 3 years ago, and to my dismay I lost it. I was delighted when I found this thread, thinking that my problems have been fixed. However my joyous celebration was put on hold as I encountered a problem with program.

I downloaded it fine, I've downloaded all the various music/movies folders fine, I've installed to the default directory, "ProgramFiles/Nox" Or whatever, and I can get the Nox.exe working, but once it boots up it asks me for the CD key.

I figured that this problem had already come up on the forum so I've looked around and read everything, and I've done all the recommended actions that were already there. (i.e. I've added -window to the shortcut's target, changed the compatibility on all the files, and switched my color setting to 16 bit. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the game several times now.) When I run Nox1.2bNoCDL.exe, this error message displays

"Windows cannot access the device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item."

And it sort of leaves it at that, when I run it in MSDOS it gives me the Access Denied message.

I am at a loss, and I was wondering if anyone on this forum would have any suggestions and/or advice.

Thanks

-KingEridani

Run the installer as administrator and let is be used by all users.

Or run the game as administrator

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download
Post by: #zx.pr0jk on July 02, 2009, 05:39:00 pm
Also, if you didn't catch it, you have to put the Nox1.2NoCDL.exe in your Nox directory in order for it to work.

And I think in this install the cd-key entered is meaningless. Put a bunch of 1's.

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download

The auto install generates a cd key, also it places the no-cd crack in the correct folder already.

Okay, so I've fixed the CD-Key, but I still cant gain access to the correct permissions needed to use the cd crack, the profile I am logged in as is the computer administrator, (I am running Windows XP Home Edition). The game now asks for the CD, which means, duh, the cd-crack isnt working... I dont understand why I shouldn't have access to the file.

Logged in as admin != Run Crack As Admin.

Right click Shortcut to Nox > Properties > Compatability (I think) > Check the Run as Admin Box.

Im going off vista but I do know the recent XP SP's use the same type of protection.

uhm, i got a small problem here.
When i tryed to play multiplayer with my cd-installed game, the game freezed at the end of downloading the patch. I thought maybe playing with your version would fix it, so i dl that. When trying to run your version (yes, i  uninstalled mine first) everything gets all blurry and weird, and not in a positive way.  :?

Anyone know what this is/how to fix it? All i wanna do is play this awesome game on the internet

Thanks

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download
Post by: #zx.pr0jk on October 27, 2009, 10:00:33 pm
No offense, but it's not worth the time to download that.

You're probably unaware that Nox runs at 800x600 resolution on most of the screens which on larger monitors may seem blurry. The highest resolution you'll get is... 1024x768(?). The game is fairly dated, approaching a decade old, and will have various odd bugs/ticks on newer systems.

The display may have tearing too while you run around. It's not a big deal and is fairly hard to notice while you're actually doing something.

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download
Post by: HAL 9000 on October 28, 2009, 10:43:34 am
No offence taken, my bad not having the time to make it smaller.

What your saying is not the problem. Im aware that 600x800 ( well, actually 1024x768 ) may seem bad on my 1680x1050 monitor, but that is definitively not the problem.
My problem is most likely (what i think) something on my pc interfering with something in your version of nox. thought you might know what, but ill try to find it out myself instead.

Thanks for the help anyways, and actually taking the time

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download
Post by: Morden Tral on October 28, 2009, 02:04:27 pm
No it is just that the newer video card drivers for NVIDIA do not correctly display the game images without resizing them moderately in windowed mode. Not sure why, just how it is, generally these are the same drivers that do not allow for full screen playing of the game in the first place. Possibly it is just blitting it to a newer directx surface with slightly different color formats.

Nox is years and years old using straight directx 6/mmx technology, you aren't going to get complete backwards compatibility from newer systems and it will get worse as it ages and the video card manufacturers cease more and more of their testing on older software. I dealt with the fuzzyness even though it pisses me off.

Thanks. You managed to tell us nothing. A little bit more information would help both you and anyone that plans on helping you.

Exactly when does it crash?
What kind of crash? Does it lock up or does it just poof back to desktop? Is there an error message?
Did you try any compatibility modes or did you open it once, see it "crash" and decide to tell us about it without trying anything yourself?

I've decided to re-install and I'm using this download to do it.

I'll post the results.

(in b4 everything works fine)

Well, everything went as planned.

Installed with msi. Installed the Westwood online part.

Loaded it up

Put in a username and password

Logged in and started playing on Chumleigh's 56k euro CTF.

Everyone is still terrible and I think a 200+ ping handicap makes it pretty fair.

What does it mean installed with msi. ?
I install the version from this topic and what else should i do so it won`t crash does it work for all of you just after installation?

msi is the file extension.

There's two installers, both of which you need to run. One is for the game, and the other is for the online components.

msi is the file extension.

There's two installers, both of which you need to run. One is for the game, and the other is for the online components.

I couldn't find an .msi installer in the one I got from http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~awesie/NoxInstall.zip, but there was an .exe installer.

So anyways, I previously installed from the .iso available via bittorrent (yes the same one that's in the easy install stuff). It went in smooth. Then I tried to install the patches and they both bitched about files not being the expected ones, etc... but it still plays in solo and such, haven't tried it with the wolapi.dll with the xwis IP, but hey maybe sometime...

Then I uninstalled it thinking "hey, I'll try the easier install and see what it's about."

It installed smoother.

"Cool", I thought.

Then I ran it.  Tried solo, selected a character.  When it went to load the game, it exited NoX.exe silently, without even a burp.

Then I ran it and tried multiplayer. Connected to xwis, selected a game and character.  When it got to loading, it exited the same way...

Did i do something wrong?  I put the serial I got from the keygen into .exe installer... maybe that was it... oh well.

Fuck it, I'm going to try installing from the cd again and patch the wolapi.  Daemon tools rocks btw.  Been using since win95.

Edit: It's an XP Sp3 box running on a Dell Mini 10 (which I can't get to run a command prompt at full screen for some graphics mode incompatibility issues i haven't isolated yet). Just so you know. As if you care.

I couldn't find an .msi installer in the one I got from http://www.contrib.andrew.cmu.edu/~awesie/NoxInstall.zip, but there was an .exe installer.

They're packaged differently, I guess. Thanks for pointing that out though, I just downloaded from that link and I can confirm it. Use the exe instead, doesn't matter.

Now, onto your actual problem. When you are about to enter a game/solo it poofs to desktop. The first thing I would try is looking into the Saves or Save folder in the Nox Directory to see if there are already player files(.plr) in there. If so, delete them all and try again.

You shouldn't need a serial period. I don't even think Nox checked it when you installed from CD.

If you're having graphics issues unrelated to Nox, that is more than likely causing issues with Nox as well. The software is now over a decade old and more and more people are having issues related to drivers and currents graphics cards simply not running its version of Directx. If you do happen to get it working, feel free to post your solution in this thread.

p.s: I do care, ever so much and I want you to know I love everyone as much as a boil on my ass. I haven't taken a hot knife to you yet, so that's saying something.

I downloaded the one from filefactory too and fc says its the same file.  It's got the .exe and not the .msi too.  Someone updated these packages since the initial release apparently.  I can't get it to keep from poofing back to the desktop.  Maybe you should give it a shot.  I'm did a windiff of the cd install + patches and this distribution. It seems there are ALOT of extra files in this package.  Not really sure why.

Tell you what, I'm going to throw a copy of XP onto a VMWare box and run this installer and see if I have a problem with my specific archetecture or if this distribution is borked.  I'll let you know.

p.s. I highly suspect it's this distribution dying, as the cdrom install works flawlessly... ;) also, as long as it's that free stong sword of embers from warrior solo chapter 1, i'm all for getting popped like an ass boil.

I checked both downloads and they are the same file. They also match the md5 posted on the first page, and I see previous posts from 2008 in this thread with the .exe (not .msi) in the image.  So, I'm going to assume it's an .exe packaged msi distribution and that there was some kind of misunderstanding when the post was first put up as to the contents.

I installed it into a fresh copy of XP Pro under vmware, and it works.  I'm now wondering if the problem is from the cd install stucking some stuff in the registry that the .exe doesn't address, screwing up the pointers to the game or something.  Let me play with it some more and I'll get back to you.  Something is causing this problem...  And it's not the archetecture, since it runs fine from the cdrom install and there aren't any significant file differences between the two distributions.

Also, if you just want the .torrent for the iso image, check http://dl.btjunkie.org/torrent/Nox-Westwood/4082e9b76d99654eb14ae646cee73f3e1ad1ed6fd36f/download.torrent (http://dl.btjunkie.org/torrent/Nox-Westwood/4082e9b76d99654eb14ae646cee73f3e1ad1ed6fd36f/download.torrent). I doubt that link is going down any time soon.

And this isn't a thread about the map editor and the map editor has no real correspondence to nox in terms of installation.

You are missing some required DLLS, nxcrypt and nxdecrypt, one or the other.

In the map editor thread I placed them on an attachment, i'm not sure why they aren't installing for everyone buy just download them and place them into your noxtools directory

Just downloaded, extracted and installed the game with no issues. Ran through the first couple of chapters without any issue in graphics and sound...im sure you know all this anyways. I can say all the links are still healthy and working as of this more recent date.

But it should be noted that you cant register with WWonline. The page my browers is directed to no longer exists. Is there an update around this? Its been years since Ive last tried to get Nox running but I dont remember having any issues with the online part. Hoping nothing has changed since :/

You no longer register, just login, if it doesn't work use a diff password / user name, when it works it auto regs that combo.

Just wanted to say thanks for all the effort you folks put into preserving this classic. I actually never got to play this the first time around. I have the cd but passed it up because i was such a Diablo head. Turns out, the cd ended up getting damaged at some point. I'm guessing it happened during one of my cross country moves. To be honest, I'm amazed I still have it.

While I appreciate the downloads, I think i'm going to get it through GoG, anyways. Hopefully if enough people see how successful it is we might end up seeing a lot more people online and maybe even a few more games like it, especially considering just how popular action/rpg's are going to be in the next few years, thanks to Diablo III, Torchlight II, Path of Exile and Grim Dawn.

Be sure you install nox quest and westwood online then. Because it doesn't have multiplayer from GoG from what I hear.

Do we need nix quest to really enjoy NoX with you guys? I was never very find of NoX quest back when it was patched from Westwood. I guess I'm asking if I need to download it if all I want to do is play pvp and ctf? Also, if I were to purchase NoX instead of using file share sites that I shy away from, how do I go about playing with you guys?

Title: Re: Easier NoX Download

You have to have quest to login and join one of the servers.

But quest is available as a separate download.

Okay so I can obtain NoX quest without fear of virus. The quest becomes how do I play with you online if GoG doesn't support Westwood online? Has that been confirmed that a GoG download doesn't come with Westwood online?

You must run nox as administrator in vista and w7, otherwise it can't use the WOLAPI.dll. If that doesn't work, then you should perhaps check if you are using CD or the noxinstall from here, if you're using CD it get's installed to C:\Westwood\ I believe, and if you install with the noxinstall from here it'll go in program files.

Could someone please post a version that has the Nox intro, I miss the Nox intro and Westwood start up thing with the awesome sounds when I open my Nox up, and I also miss the quests and audio, I know that there is a download for the audio but I am obscenely lazy...

I have the original disk but I have 3-5 computers so if I was playing LAN I don't have a disk for each computer so I use this version.
I mean it is not the most important thing in the would but I really miss that feeling I got when I opened up Nox in the old days.

Thanks I guess?
