[20:12] <@Zec|Work> Soneca asks: how do you guys deal with the WoW Arena comparison? do you think it really looks like WoW Arena or is it more like DOTA?maybe another game?
[20:12] <@Shelt> I would say its more like Nox pvp, but a lot better. Or Diablo, or Quake but in 3:d person =D
That heresy is unforgivable.
Bloodline champions is inherently inferior gameplay wise to every game he listed. Including Guild Wars, and I have no love for that franchise. He may have taken inspiration from them all, but he damn sure didn't take the correct things from each.
Diablo is a terrible example to source for pvp inspiration. It's fundamentally about collecting loot and killing monsters. PVP in Diablo is a developer afterthought in terms of balance, arenas, and viability.
Guild Wars, while having a pvp component, is overwhelmingly limiting with its defined handful of skill and gear builds. And by gear builds, I mean the 3 sets that are even worth equipping. WoW Arena also takes a big steaming shit on their system. Guild Wars is WoW for people that can't afford WoW.
It is in
NO WAY similar to quake. For one, quake is fast paced to the point of being unfair to new-intermediate players. A quake enthusiast would spit in your face for claiming such blatant bullshit.
Bloodlines IS more in pace with Dota. If he wants to claim that he was inspired by Diablo and Guild Wars, it would also make more sense to relate it to dota. Atleast then, you don't look like a jackass when two games primarily about COLLECTING LOOT are compared to your game which is arena based(dota), team based(dota), and based around several archetypes with limited abilities(dota).
Simply put, just because a dev says they were "inspired" by something, doesn't mean they know or even believe what they're saying. They wanted to make a team based 3rd person action game. They came up with something that plays like a
lootless dota. How people can actually rationalize those comparisons to successful titles is nothing short of astounding to me. I don't even think this compares to WoW Arena, an equally inferior pvp structure.
The other day I saw a thread on a developer forum with concept art clearly showing a Mechwarrior Madcat and yet no one mentioned battletech anywhere in the thread. It's pretty fucking obvious the average gamer doesn't know jack shit about where ideas originated.
Paraphrase of the day: "Hurrp durrp make fast pvp. Hurrrr It's 'fast' so it's like quake. It's third person so it's like Diablo. eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr"
